Keeping Pace: How Greater Boston’s Bus System Can Support a Growing and Changing Region
About
ITDP’s US Program partnered with LivableStreets Alliance on this report on Greater Boston’s bus system that outlines an actionable agenda for regional decision-makers at the state, agency, and local levels to enact within the next few years. While the system’s challenges may be daunting, Greater Boston’s bus network is one of the most flexible and adaptable pieces of the transit system. Dramatic improvement is possible by 2030 if actors at all levels of government work together to make public transport services a priority.
The report is a call-to-action to stakeholders at all levels to work together and prioritize Greater Boston’s bus system to best serve the riders who expect and deserve improvements in the coming years. While systemwide MBTA ridership has yet to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic fully, bus-dependent regions of Greater Boston now have a larger ridership than even before the crisis, underscoring the need for more frequent, reliable, accessible service.
For other US cities, this report and its recommendations offer a roadmap for planning public transit and bus systems that reflect the needs, demands, and interests of a growing and changing population in a pandemic-era world.
