2026 STA Spotlight: Santiago, Chile
About
A decade ago, Santiago, Chile, received the 2017 Sustainable Transport Award for its widespread improvements to urban space, cycling networks, and public transport service. This progress in urban mobility has continued — in 2026, Santiago’s public bus fleet includes more than 4,400 electric buses, accounting for approximately half of all the electric buses in Latin America. In addition, this marks the largest such fleet deployed anywhere outside of China. To reach this milestone, Santiago took an ambitious approach to its electric mobility transition with targeted public policies and subsidies, procurement standards, and innovative business models.
For these efforts, Santiago, Chile earned an Honorable Mention as part of the 2026 Sustainable Transport Award for its vision and dedication to improving the state of public transport locally and nationally. Read this STA Spotlight here for more details on their interventions.
