2026 STA Spotlight: Kochi, India
About
Kochi, India, has emerged as a global leader in sustainable urban mobility through the development of the Kochi Water Metro, the country’s first integrated water-based public transport system. Launched to improve connectivity across the city’s extensive network of waterways, the Water Metro links island communities with urban centers through a modern fleet of electric ferries and purpose-built terminals. By providing a reliable, affordable, and low-emission alternative to road travel, the system has transformed daily mobility for thousands of residents while helping reduce road-related congestion and pollution.
The Water Metro demonstrates how cities can leverage natural waterways to build cleaner, more inclusive transport networks. Its electric vessels and integration with the city’s Metro Rail and bus networks, along with a focus on last-mile connectivity, have improved access to jobs, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for previously underserved communities. The project also showcases how investment in innovative public transport can support climate goals, enhance resilience, and improve quality of life.
Recognized regionally as a model for urban transport, Kochi’s recent efforts offer valuable lessons for cities seeking to expand integrated public transit while reducing emissions and dependence on private vehicles.
