The Future of Public Transport: Well-Funded, Equitable and Resilient
About
In response to equity, climate, health and economic crises worldwide, ITDP and VREF convened global transport stakeholders in 2022-2023 to consider the importance of public transport as the main enabler for accessible, resilient and just cities.
This year-long MOBILIZE Learning Lab program gathered expert researchers and practitioners from around the world to ideate on the actions needed to move cities towards better public transport systems for all. While the future of public transport can encompass a number of diverse issues—from innovative technologies to electric vehicles—the Learning Lab focused specifically on exploring the future through the lenses of equity, resilience, and financial sustainability.
The MOBILIZE Learning Lab developed several takeaways and needs based on in-depth workshops and discussions framed around the ideas that the future of public transport needs to be resilient, equitable, and well-funded.
To achieve this, cities and decision-makers need to recognize the important role of high-quality public transport in peoples’ daily lives, as well as the integration of better walking, cycling, and dense land-use planning for the future of all urban communities. The conclusions from the Lab are presented in this white paper, which aims to lay the groundwork for more collaboration, policymaking, and advocacy amongst transport stakeholders.
