Anies Rasyid Baswedan was born in Kuningan, West Java, on May 7th 1969. The grandson of national hero A.R. Baswedan has shown his talent of leadership at young age. In February 1992, he was assigned to be the chairman of Student Senate during his time of study at Faculty of Economics in Gajah Mada University (1989-1995).
After succeeded in getting bachelor’s degree in economy from Gajah Mada University, Anies received Fulbright scholarship for his master study at School of Public Affairs, University of Maryland, USA in 1997-1998. He then continued on earning his doctoral degree in political science at Northern Illinois University, USA, from 1999 to 2005. His dissertation, titled Regional Autonomy and Patterns of Democracy in Indonesia, reveals the impact of decentralization on regional government’s transparancy and public participation in 177 regencies and cities across Indonesia.
When he returned home, Anies Baswedan succeeded Prof. Dr. Nurcholis Madjid as rector of Paramadina University on May 15th, 2007. As a rector at 38, Anies become one of Indonesia’s youngest university rectors at that time.
In 2009, he initiated Indonesia Mengajar which aims to send excellent youths of Indonesia to teach in remote regions across the archipelago. His perseverance in education led him to be appointed as the Culture and Education Minister by President Jokowi, from 2014 to 2016. He was elected as the governor of Jakarta since 2017, who put forward the City 4.0 approach, where the provincial government becomes the collaborator and the citizens as the co-creator, in order to develop the capital city with happy people.
