The largest city in North America, Mexico City, has, over the last decade, become a best practice model for transit, cycling, and public spaces. In 2013, Mexico City won the Sustainable Transport Award for revitalizing the historic city center with pedestrian-only streets, renovated plazas, a massive network of cycle lanes, expansion of the successful bike share, ecobici, and Line 4 of Metrobus BRT. In 2018, Mexico City became a world leader in parking reform, with a major policy achievement in eliminating parking minimums, and replacing them with maximums, putting them far ahead of other cities in the region in its commitment to prioritize people over cars.

ITDP Mexico was a strong advocate for parking reform, and worked with the city and partners to craft the policy. The campaign, Menos Cajones, Más Ciudad (less parking, more city), built support for the policy. ITDP continues to work with the city to implement these reforms, and study the impact. While Mexico City has made incredible progress over the years, challenges, such as road safety, remain. With ITDP Mexico’s support, the national government recently passed a groundbreaking road safety act, and continue to work together to improve quality of life for all Chilangos.
