Centre okays Ahmedabad’s ambitious BRTS project

The first phase is 12 kms from RTO circle to Pirana bridge. It is routed through Shivranjani cross roads, Nehrunagar, Shreyas crossing and Vasna. Under the project aimed at providing better public transportation there will be special lanes for buses.

There will be modern bus stops, special low floor CNG buses and electronic ticketing system. There will be parking, cycle track and wide footpaths in the BRTS lane.

Mayor Amit Shah and Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam said that the cost of the first phase would be Rs.87.60 crore. Of this 35 percent will be given by Central government and 15 percent by State government. The rest will be borne by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The entire project is 58 kms long passing through various stretches of the city. The AMC has divided the entire project into four parts. The cost of the entire project is Rs.493 crore. Gautam said that tenders for the first phase would be floated by August end.

He said that city based CEPT has designed the project. While ITDP of New York and Lea associates of Delhi are technical consultants. He said that Pune and Indore are also working on the project, and the Ahmedabad project would be the pilot project in the country.
