2026 STA Spotlight: Salvador, Brazil
About
Since 2024, Salvador, Brazil has emerged as a leader in sustainable and inclusive public transport, focusing on high-quality and electric BRT centered on the BRT Salvador system. The city inaugurated a new 7-kilometer BRT corridor, bringing the system’s service area to 12-kilometers along two corridors with multiple lines. This expansion further integrates modern station infrastructure, electric bus fleets, and redesigned urban spaces to enhance safety, accessibility, and multimodal connectivity. BRT Salvador also began operating an electric terminal dedicated to recharging its buses, the first and only of its kind in Brazil.
ith its strong political leadership and institutional engagement, Salvador’s public transport reforms have been instrumental in charting a promising path forward for urban mobility systems.
The city and its municipal mobility authority, SEMOB, have continued their commitment to expanding public transport access to better serve the needs of a growing population and economy.
