Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Resource Hub

Welcome to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Hub!

The BRT Learning Hub is a curated collection of resources to help you better plan, operate, and advocate for BRT systems. The resources are organized into four modules that consist of core material recommended for all and complementary content for those interested in exploring further.

Who These Resources Are For:

Our Learning Hub provides a roadmap for city officials, transport planners, urban planners, and civil society to advance their BRT planning and development efforts. With Basic and Technical levels of information, the resources are useful to decision-makers, advocates, and academics who want to explore global best practices and lessons learned through foundational and informative resource formats. In addition, transport planners and practitioners looking to implement new BRT systems can learn more technical information about designing and planning BRT. You can follow all of the provided resources inside the space or dive deeper into specific topics or themes.

About These Resources:

This collection includes guides, case studies, short explanatory videos, and webinar recordings that include best practices, stories, definitions, and technical information for different types of audiences. The resources are primarily in English, with other language options for key publications and videos. Materials are organized into four thematic modules that convey different levels of technical information, so users can navigate according to their specific needs and interests regarding BRT.

  • Basic resources (Modules 1-3):Convey basic information about the importance of the BRT systems for the cities, their main characteristics and stages of planning, and the main tools for its use;
  • Technical resources (Module 4): Highlight technical information about how to develop, monitor, and evaluate BRT service planning and implementation.

Anyone who is interested in testing their understanding of both Basic and Technical concepts can take multiple-choice quiz to receive a certificate that can be uploaded on professional platforms like LinkedIn. The different Modules are going to be released every two weeks. The full material will be available in early March, and the quiz will become available after the release of Module 4 (March 2025).

Resource Key:

Modules

Module 1: Why Do Cities Need BRT?

This module explains the importance of providing high-quality public transport for all and BRT’s role in promoting equity, efficiency and support for the environment. BRT corridors offer a powerful solution for building sustainable and equitable transport systems by reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality and public health, promoting economic development, enhancing road safety, and beyond.

Goals of Module 1:
  • Understand why BRT is an equitable solution for addressing diverse mobility needs while maximizing efficiency in cities.
  • Learn why BRT can be the right mode for climate adaptation and serve as a resilient transport solution for different contexts.

Module 2: Introduction to BRT Basics

Module 2 will be released February 18, 2025.

This module is an ideal starting point for anyone interested in learning about BRT. It covers the basics of BRT, including its definition, key features and its essential components for creating inclusive, accessible and resilient systems. You will learn more about the resources developed based on real-world experiences and the best practices of cities with successful BRT systems. The themes within this module spotlight the importance of BRT planning and operations for everyday users of the system to help adapt to climate change and new advancements in technology.

Goals of Module 2:
  • Learn the basic elements of BRT;
  • Learn how to make BRT systems that tackle climate change through resilience and sustainable solutions;
  • Explore case studies that improve accessibility for all, with an emphasis on the disadvantages of users like women, caregivers, people with disabilities and children.

Module 3: BRT Tools for Planning and Evaluation

Module 3 will be released March 4, 2025.

Crafting a BRT system involves meticulous planning in corridor, vehicle, and station design. The tools provided in this module can help cities design good BRT systems and evaluate existing ones to help improve the operations, efficiency and user experience. This section provides you with more information on the elements that make up the assessment of a BRT corridor, offering resources tailored for the implementation or monitoring of BRT systems.

Goals of Module 3:
  • Learn how to use key tools for planning a BRT system, such as The BRT Standard and the BRT Simple Calculator of Project Effects (SCOPE) tool;
  • Highlight the key metrics for evaluating a BRT system;
  • Learn about case studies of BRT systems that demonstrate quality planning and evaluation practices that lead to successful systems.

Module 4: How to Make BRT A Sustainable, Accessible and Inclusive Solution for Cities

Module 4 will be released March 18, 2025.

A BRT corridor is an essential feature of BRT, but implementing it includes many steps, from the initial design to a build-out phase. This section offers resources that dive deeper into the planning of the BRT, stemming from the BRT Planning Guide. These materials are especially useful to transport planners and cities looking to implement new BRT systems.

Goals of Module 4:
  • Walk through each phase of planning a BRT system, from design to construction to operations;
  • Explore real examples of the BRT implementation process to gain insights into what works and why;
  • Discover how innovative technology solutions can maximize the effectiveness of BRT systems.
