From streets for cars to streets for all, the city of Lviv has spearheaded an unprecedented transformation of its public realm and sustainable mobility in the last decade. The city of Ukraine is also the honorable mention recipient of the 2021 Sustainable Transport Award, recognized for its improvements in public transport and pedestrian and cycle infrastructure. Lviv is on its way to meeting an ambitious goal of becoming a “city of short distances”. 

This webinar showcases how public movements for safe walking and cycling conditions can galvanize public support and political will for a shift towards more convenient, equitable and attractive ways of travel. Orest Oleksiv, the Head of the Transport Department for the City of Lviv, presented about the major wins and lessons learned from the city’s actions and gave a highlight on the COVID recovery processes.

 

About the Speaker

Orest Oleskiv Head of the Transport Office, City of Lviv, Ukraine

Orest is an expert on mobility and transport. For the last 1.5 years, he has been serving as the Head of the Transport Office in the City of Lviv. In his role, he is responsible for the organization of public transport, road safety and parking policy. Before working in the Transport Office, he was coordinating the development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in Lviv. Orest is also known for his cycling advocacy, pushing for high quality cycling infrastructure and safe, livable street design.
