Today the U.S. House of Representatives heard testimony from leading experts as they prepared to write the next federal transportation bill. ITDP’s Global Policy Director and Founder, Michael Replogle’s testimony outlined steps for Congress to get America’s transportation investments moving smarter and faster: (1) ensure adequate funding for environmental and resource agencies to be involved in state and metropolitan planning and project reviews, (2) create new incentives for timely project delivery and to better link transport planning and project reviews, (3) speed project approvals with new approaches to design and monitor environmental mitigation, and (4) encourage greater transportation project design flexibility. These measures can help transportation plans and programs deliver on vital national goals of improving mobility and supporting economic development while cutting pollution and fuel use. Other witnesses in the hearing before the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, included the Federal Highway Administrator, Victor Mendez, the Secretary of Transportation for Kansas, Deborah Miller, the CEO of the Orange County Transportation Authority, Will Kempton, and the CEO of the Transportation Corridors Agencies, Tom Margro.
