Reasons for NominationIt was one of the first cities to implement a bus rapid transport (BRT) system using exclusive lanes, a large bicycle route network and green areas in conjuntion with the transportaton system. Curitiba made use of its capacity to direct land use planning and use it as as a tool to ensure efficient use of the system. Along the main transportation corridors, a higher urban density is allowed in order to promote the use of the system and reduce the use of private cars. |

BackgroundCuritiba is the capital city of the State of Parana in Brazil. Its metropolitan area has more than 2 million inhabitants. It is a very progressive city with important agricultural and industrial backbones. The city has managed to establish one of the best transportation networks in the world and provides special services for school students, handicapped.
